Dunedin, March 12.
Mr Docherty, one of the original prospectors for copper at Dftsky. Sound, and also one of the promocersbf the Dusky Sound Copper Mining Company, has arrived in town with thp cheering, news that a lode of copper baa been struck by the company’s miners.. In Dunedin, the city ! rates for the year 1878-9, amount to £15,605 18s 9d, the amount outstanding ut this 'date being £2l 12s fid., In Christchurch the rates for the same period, amount to £8404, the amonht outstanding at date being £267. For the whole, of arrears in Dunedin judgment of Court has been obtained.

A serious accident happened this morning to one of the men employed by Messrs Proudfoot and Co. in laying the Silverstreatn Water-supply pipes through the Caversham tunnel. The gang commenced work soon after 11 o’clock every night, ,and knocked off shortly before six in the morning. The furnace at which the lead for soldering is melted is erected outside the tnhnel, and when lead is required the pot is placed over a small fire and run in on a trolly. At four o’clock this morning the trolly, with several workmen on it, was being run in when, from some unexplained reason, the wheels came off, capsizing it, throwing: the men to the ground, and upsetting the pot of boiling lead over one of them named George Bean, who was fearfully burned about the neck, down the back and all over one side of his body* ; He was immediately taken to his own residence at Caversham, where he was attended by Dr Eveligh. Another of the men got one of his feet scalded by the lead but his injuries were not serious. Nelson, March 13. A fire occured late this afternoon near Brightwater encampment. The house of Mr White, Chairman of the Waimea Road Board, was completely destroyed. Ail the family were in town, except Mrs White and ; some : young children. Several of the' ; Volunteers who had been detained l in the ; camp rendered in valuable assistance, and by their efforts the brewery, adjoining the house, was saved*, Damages roughly estimated at .£ISOO. It is believed the house was partly insured. . Napier, March 12. It was reported itr town to-day that criminal information;,for conspiracy in. defrauding natives has been laid against two prominent settlers, causing a good deal of comment.

The brigantyne Island lily has brought up from Chatham Islands a sample of the first wheat ever grown on them. It will run 40 bushels to the acre. The Harbor decided to borrow ,£50,000 on debentures for rebuilding and forming streets on the reclamation ground. Christchurch, March 13* Two locomotives have arrived per Piako, the Christchurch section of railway, but it is feared .they will be much damaged by fire. Mr and Mrs Hart open their operetta season at the Oddfellows Hall tonight. Timaru, March 13. A man named Shields was; standing between the rails, and was caught by an engine, and seriously injured, and has since died. ; Shields was under the influence of drink at the time. He leaves a wife and three young children, comfortably piovided for.
