■ : A rat of a* boy, whd had Ati rain searched the Post-office cprridtfriiJ for' the nickel which a careless hand, occasionally dirops at the stamp clerk's wfa; dow,- took bis position before a ;cbest-* nut-stand, and eyed the fresih nuts a* long time before drawing a deep sigh and groaning : 0, "1 wish I was rich f The chestnut roaster made titf reply,and the odour of the roasting nrits filially' indue'ed.. the . boy io enquire, " Are' chestnuts healthy ? " No bub 1 they are* prolific of indigestion," was the reply. After,a while the boy .thought it was* time" to* reiiia'rk. ' "Did yon ever hear the story of the man who .gave' tlie' poor boy a- handful of chestnuts, and when he grew' up atfd got rieft he' rewarded the old man with a diamond pin and a four-horse" team 1" " No, never '<Hd.; : '."but'l heard of a man who* brought a poor boy to the edge of the graVe! by' giving him,a dozen ebesnuts."" The lad took a turn up and' seeurecr another strong sniff of the" odour, and then,leaned over pered,- "If I'll take' the chances on the' edge-6f-tlie-gravo b\isiuess, will yotf tafcef the chances on the chesuutsr ?
