The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. FRIDAY, MARCH 7, 1879.

The Assessment Court was held at the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, M. Price, Esq., presiding as Judge. A large number of objections were heard, a detailed list of which will appear to* morrow.

A meeting of the Kaitangata Relief Fund Committee will be held at the Town Hall this evening, By the Claud Hamilton, which" left Hokitika for Melbourne yesterday, there was shipped by the various banks the following gold :—Bank of New Zealand, 36370zs 16dwts 12grs j Union Bank, 14070zs ldwt. The Greymouth Banks also forwarded the following quantities : Bank of New Zealand, 43750zs 3dwta \ National Bank, 22420»b Bdwtu I9gra } Union Bank, 16130zb 13d wts. The Chinese shipment was 1440zs at Greymouth. A splendid opportunity for a good investment will be offered at Westbrooke, to-morrow, when Mr W. A telegram from Sydney dated the 28th ult, states that the Hatfield bushrangers of whose doings we gave particulars yesterday were promptly captured by the New South Wales police Troopers Beresford, Day, and Power pursued them 380 miles. Several shots were exchanged, and Power was wounded; the scoundrels then surrendered. Two other bushrangers have been captured in the Dubbo district. They have been brought up before the Magistrate, and remanded on six charges. The natives of the" Bonnie land o'cakes'* are generally thought to be extremely fond of oatmeal, either in the shape of " stirabout," " porridge," or " burgoo ;" but we have it upon the authority of a Scotchman and Presbyterian minister that oatmeal is looked upon, by him at least, as " shabby stuff." At the Presbyterian Assembly, during the discussion of an overture from the Wellington Presbytery relative to the granting of £SO a year towards the salary of a minister for the fielding district, Mr Paterson pointed out' that the £IOO a year granted to the minister was not sufficient to keep him. One of the rev gentlmen present expressed an opinion that £IOO was enough. " Oh yes," replied the Rev Mr Paterson, " he might live upon oatmeal and such shabby fare." There was a general smile, and the Assembly proceeded with the discussion,
