The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1879.

The concert in aid of the building fund of Holy Trinity Church, which will take place at the Theatre Royal this evening, from the character and variety of the programme announced, Combined with the object in view, should ensure a large attendance. As on one or two occasions of a similar nature those present have been greatly annoyed by the larrikin element, we may mention that the Com= mittee have taken steps to prevent a reoccurrence of this intolerable nuisance to-night. There is also another very objectionable practice, that of smoking at these entertainments, which we trust to see discontinued, as however necessary to the enjoyment oftheindulger, itis far from beneficial to the performers, and thoroughly out of taste and place in a Crowded audience.

A meeting of the Borough Council Was held last evening, a full report of which is held.over until to-morrow.

A meeting was held last evening at Mr Kirkpatrick's, Seddon-street, for the pur* pose of taking steps to relieve the wife and family of the pate Mr R, Stevenson, who was accidentally killed last week at Stafford Town, and through whose death a widow and seven children are left totally Unprovided for, There was a large number of persons present, and a committee having been elected, it was unanimously agreed to act in conjunction with the Committee appointed at Stafford Town, and to canvass for subscriptions amongst the deceased's friends and acquaintances in the district. Mr Drummond was appointed and Mr Todd Secretary to the Committee for that purpose. The members of the 1.0.Gr.T. Lodge, of which Mr Stevenson was an old and highly respected member, intend also, we are informed, giving a concert for a similar object at an early date.

A miner named William Menziea was received into the Hospital last evening suffering from a severe scalp wound which he sustained while working in his claim at Dunedin Flat. Dr Huxtable who was in attendance immediately dressed the wound and we hear to-day the injured man is progressing favourably". During the flood in the Teremakau river yesterday afternoon an act of intrepidity occurred not often witnessed, ;.nd, which should make some of our

veteran watoi'men plying on that river blush, Tt appears that ;i boy named Thomas who is employed by Mr flugg in carrying over the milk, fie produce of his cows on the other side of

the river was, owing to the flood, detained on the opposite side yesterday afternoon, and finding that none of the leagally qualified river practitioners would attempt to cross with a bdat, he returned to his old dug-out that was lying waterlogged on the beach, and, after bailing it out, safely crossed the river in this fragile craft, to the disgust of the boatmen generally and the comfort of those who were anxiously awaiting the appearance of their tea amalgamator.

The firing of the second monthly Rifle handicap match will take place at the Range to=morrow, when the scores made, minus the handicap points, will also determine the member of the corps who is to represent the local Contingent at the first meeting of the Hew Zealand Rifle Association in Nelson. We learn that a subscription has been organised for this purpose, as throughout the rest of the Colony one or two representatives have been sent from each district by the lity of the residents thereof.

The Prince of Wales and Br. Lyon Play fair were standing near a cauldron contain* ing lead which Was boiling at white heat-. " Has your Royal Highness any faith in science?" said the docter. "Certainly," replied the Prince. " Will you, then place your hand in the boiling metal, and Iftdle out a portion of it ?" "Do you tell me to do this I l ' asked the Prince, " I do," replied the doctor. The Prince then ladled out some of the boiling lead with his hand, without sustaining any injury. It is a well-kltowu scientific fact that the human hand may be placed uninjured in lead boiling at white heat, being protected from any harm by. the moisture of the skin. Should the lead be at a perceptibly lower temperature, the effect need not be described, After this let no one underrate the courage of the Prince of Wales.
