A correspondent writing from Stafford this morning, kindly furnishes us with particulars of the fatal accident at Waimea Mr Robt. Steveiison was killed yesterday by the fall of a log whilst at Work in his sluicing claim oil Pretty Woman; dully. He had beeli working alurte, and when Ins mate came to relieve him—they work in shifts—he was foimd quite dead, pinned to the ground by a log, which seems to have come down from a height of ‘JO feet or so. Tim deceased) who was a very old and esteemed resident of this district, leaves a widow and seven children utterly unprovided for. An inquest will be held to-day. Tenders aro invited for carting goods from the Tramway Station to Dillmau’s Town, a& p.r ion.
We regret to learti that Miss. O’Reilly) Who was Well known in this town) died suddenly last night, at Westbrooke, of acute inflaraation* The funeral will take place to-morrow, at two o’clock.
The following gentlemen were elected members of the new Harbour Board, Hokitika : Malfroy, 240 votes ; Walker, 243; Bonar, 209 ; Duncan, 152 ; Cooke, 121. There were eleven candidates.
We learn that Mr P. A* Birch, Clerk to the Resident Magistrate’s Court, has received from the Government six weeks’ leave of absence, Which he intends spending in Visiting various places in the colony. As Mr Birch has during the hist six years been constantly confined to his duties—-which although not of a laborious are of a highly important nature—the present relaxation has been most deservedly earned*
Referring to the late serious accident that Was telegraphed from Wellington as having occurred to Mr G. W. Nicoll, the Argus states that a the account was much exaggerated,” as a private telegram received in Greymouth last evening from Mr Nicoll states-^'‘ None of the children hurt. We are all quite well.”
The witnesses in support of the charge against Lady Gooch and her nurse, Aline Walker, of having conspired together to palm off a spurious child upon her husband Sir Francis Gooch, with intent to cheat and deceive him, went before tile grand jury At the Central Criminal Court on December, 10. After hearing all the evidence that was laid before them the Grand Jury came into court and made the following presentment ‘No true bill against Annie Louisa Gooch and Anne Walker for misdemeanour.” No remark Was made and the grand jury Were shortly afterwards discharged For miraculous cures by the use of Eucalypti Extract, read fourth page*—[Advt.]
Mr W* Will WAY having sold his plant and interest in the Dyeing Business to Mr R. Upjohn (who has become practically acquainted with the trade), begs to solicit the kind patronage hitherto afforded him to his successor.—Mrs Upjohn announces that she is prepared to clean and dye hats, feathers, gloves, Ac., in the best style.
