The land withdrawn from this goldfield on the 28th ultimo, by proclamation under the hand of his Excellency the Governor, will be offered for sale by public auction, at the Court House, Kumara, on Wednesday, the 12th day of March next. In another column will be found the numbers of the sections that will be offered, the upset price, and also the value for improvements made thereon.
We are glad to observe that with a view to open up more direct communication and trade with Mignonette Flat, and al§d to enable parties to prospect the ground between there and the Greenstone road, the Prospectiing Association have called for tenders for making a track in that direction. Specifications can be seen at the Secrbtarys office, and tenders will close at noon on Monday next. It is very generally assumed, and doubtless on authentic grounds; that the appointment of a Trustee in Bankruptcy is of a highly lucrative and inactive nature. Thdre is, however, no rule without an exception, as we are reliably informed that a gentleman officially visiting this town in that capacity was hastily summoned at a late hour the very first night of his arrival (from a most ingenious and interesting giiuje, in which three hones and a coin of the realm form the chief items), to attend a meeting in one of the estates in which he was interested; as the assets therein had suddenly and materially increased, and the fortunate partners were anxious that the trustee should receive tile full benefit, if any, of the addition. A meeting of the shareholders of the Public Hall Company will he held on Tuesday next, to receive the balance-sheet and also elect directors for' the' ensuing year.
We are requested by Mr M. Maloney, the well-known aerated-water manufacturer, to state that it was not his name that figured in our report of the proceed,, ings of the Resident Magistrate's' Court on Thursday last, although unpleasantly' for him the individual who appeared on that occasion gave one exactly similar. At a recent ball .in Paris the electric light was tried, to the emihent discomfiture of some of the ladies, one of them whose cosmetic objected to the electric flame, turning perfectly black. False roses were displayed in all their nakedness-, and a regular stampede into a dressingroom took place. There rouge was washed off and powder dusted on ; but the effect of the latter process was still more comical, each lady looked as if half prepared for the role of a clown in the pantomine. The introduction of this illumination was not a practical joke. Monsieur Cernuischi simply desired to have his rooms brilliantly lighted, and was guiltless of a malicious intention of converting his establishment into a “ Palace of Truth.”
