SERGT-MAJOR KELSALL
Our telegrams lately contained an account of an unfortunate accident afc the Napier Rifle Range by which Sergt-. Major Kelsail, the Drill Instructor, lost his life. From an exchange we learn the following particulars relating to the deceased : Sergt KeiißaU was an old soldier in the British Amiy, and h&d seen considerable service ; he entered the Royal Artillery as a young man, and is believed to haw served through a. portion of (he Crimean war. The character which hfi bore may he gathered from the fact that whan the War Office determined to send teNHwJjrtilamiin eight Conductors of Milb'tary Stores, Sergfr. Ke.lsvill Was one who was selected, and he came out that year, and was stationed at Fort Bi'itdnlart, Auckland '; on the withdrawal of the troops from this colony, Mr Khlsmll returned to England with them ; )io was again selected by' the War Office on the application of the New 2"iil:>nd Government, as Artillery Instructor of Volunteers, and returning to this colony Was appointed to the Hawke's Bay district. During his stay there he earned the resj-ect and esteem of the volunteers of all ranks, :tnd tin-; cireuinstances attending his death have shed quite a. gloom over the town.
