Davidson v. F. 0. Tabart; claim £7 10s, for a section sold to plaintiff which defendant could give no title to as per agreement at sale. Davidson v. Hayes, in which Mr Perkins appeared for plaintiff and Mr Hawkins for defendant, was adjourned for a week to enable the parties to settle the matter equitably out of Court. By a proclamation issued under the hand of his Excellency the Governor on Tuesday, 28th day of January last, and which appears in the New Zealand Gazette of the 30th ultimo, all those parcels of land situated on the West side of the Main street are under the 45th section of the Mines x\.ct, 1877," withdrawn from this goldfield, and such land Will henceforth be dealt with in every respect as though they had never been comprised in any mining district. As the description o: the land withdrawn is very volumious we may simply state that it includes all the sections from No. 23 to 14G on the Greenstone road, and from 320 to 451 on the Town Belt west.

At a meeting of the Hospital Committee last evening, the sum of £9 was received for annual tickets issued since the proceeding meeting. The remainder of the business was chiefly in connection with the late concert, and several small items were passed for payment in regard thereto. The gross proceeds realised at the" entertainment amounted to the magnificent sum of £99 lGs Gd, and, as the vocalistic i.nd musical talent was given gratis, and also several articles required were liberally supplied by the townspeople at a similar charge, the actual expenses incurred amount to a most insignificant sum.

A case occurred in the Magistrate's Court this morning which clearly illustrated the annoyance and trouble to which some persons subject themselves through a "penny wise and p >und foolish " policy. An agent who appeared for the trustees in. a case in which he had to prove the debt was called on by the Court to produce his authority. This he did by handing in a document purporting to be a power of attorney, which, however, on examination, proved to be both undated and also drawn up by some person uiiacquunted with legal technicalities. This necessitated the case being adjourned for a week, to enable the plaintiff to obtain the necessary and leg.rl power.

We understand that the entertainment in aid of the funds of the Wesleyan Church has received another addition to its programme, of a most attractive character, as the Ku.nara String Band have generously acceded to a request made specially to them by the Committee for their services on the occasion.

The election of a, new member to the seat vacant in the IJorough Council took place at the Town Hall to-day. Th« poll had not closed at the time of our goiii"- to press. Judging from the amount of interest evinced by the ratepayers therein, the Returning Officer's duties in making up the result will not be of a- laborious nature.

In another column will be found the advertisement calling for tenders for the construction of the first section of the Grey mouth and H ikitika Railway/ The tenders close at noon on Tuesday,- 4th March, and plans and specifications can be seen at the Public Works Office, Greymouth, liokitika, Wellington, Christchurch, and the Survey Office, Reef ton.-

"His Excellency. the Governor," says the Post, " visited Mr Herbert Deverill's photograph studio, Lambton Quay, and sat to Mr De verill for a series of portraits." There is no doubt that Governors make «ood pen-traits, and from tin's point of view are useful members of society.
