An old lady, 82 years of age, died very suddenly at Kaiapoi yesterday, she was found laying in her garden quite dead. Her death was attributed to an appoletic fit. Febiuary 4. A man named Edward M'Cosker, who was stacking hay on a farm near Duneandel, was killed on Friday, by a log of wood being blown off the stack on to his head. A 'man-named Scott formerly licensee of Scott's Hotel, Duihatn street, shot himself in his bedroom with a revolver. Yesterday 215 sets of wheels and axles arrived per Northern Monarch. A girl named Julia M'Grath wait brought up at the RM. Court to-day under th-.« provisions of the Neglected and Criminal Childrens' Act. Her father had about 25 acres of land on a Maori eHuary and some cattle, and had sent his daughter to herd the cattle. She had been living almost without food and shelter, and had no ch-inge of clothes for a fortnight. Her only refuge an old tent, had been blown down by th" gales, and she had slept under a flax bush. . The. "Messrs Macandrew, Stout, Sheehan, and Ballancß are expected in Wellington next week. There were £2173 collected at the Wellington Customs yesterday. The Government surveyors have discovered a capital railway line for the Hntt and Wakauia railway between Porirua Harbor and Paikakariki; the rise in five miles does not exceed 200 yards. The John Elder sailed from Plymouth for New Zealand on the 31st January. The Government will; call for tenders for the eiection of a railway wharf on reclaimed ground before toe 18th inst., and the work is to be completed within the shortest possible time. Wm. Brown,.from Newcastle lately, was arrested yesterday for stealing twenty shillings from an oyster saloon. On searching his effects, skeleton keys, files, and other burglarious tools were found. When brought up this morning, he showed an intimate acquaintance with the usages of the Police Court.
The sale of reclaimed land by Mr Duncan began to-day. The corner allotment having a frontage to Lambton Quay, fetched £63 per foot •;. the others from £SB per foot for the highest, and £3O for the lowest, the average being £37 for the first bloek. There was a large attendance, and the bidding was fairly spirited. The four lots adjoining Mills'. foundry were bought by Mr Wright (supposed to be for Mills), at an average of £53 per foot. Four other lots adjoining were sold at an average of £6l per foot. One corner lot, facing Feafhei-ston and Whitmore streets, fetched £154 per foot, but had a short frontage, with great depth. The rest is now averaging about £45 per foot.
