The first meeting of the Local School Committee was held at the State School, on Saturday evening, all the members being present. Mr R. J. Seddon was unanimously elected Chairman for the ensuing year ; and, after some other business had bedii transacted, the meetingadjourned until the first Monday in March. A grand vocalaud instrumental concert will be held at the Theatre Royal, this evening, under the superintendance of Mr O’Connell, the premier violinist. At the conclusion of the entertainment a distribution of gifts consisting of various articles of colonial jewellery will take place and as all those purchasing a ticket will be entitled to one or two sealed envelopes, any one of them may contain the " lucky number of a valuable prize, A meeting of the Hospital Committee will oe held at the Secretary’s room, in Main street, on Wednesday evening next.
We learn from an English paper that locomotives with steam generated without fire are now at work on.the tramway from Rueil to Marly, near Paris, and with very satisfactory results. The system in . use is one introduced by M; Frrtncy,- an; engineer, and is based on the' fact that water boils at a lower temperature proportionately to the reduction of the atmospheric pressure. Intelligence was received in Melbourne by cable on Monday that at the meeting of the proprietors of the Union Bank of Australia, held in London : on the 13th inst., a dividend was declared at the rate of 16 per cent, per anum for the halfyear ending3.lst Ueceniber, 1378 .Twenty thousand pounds was added to the reserve fund, and £7,365 carried over to /next account.
