The judge was eminently 'practical in Ida character—knpw nothing of cards or the tricks of those who co'fttrivejto find a livelihood by ; handling them. He had never heard ‘of the grandmother’s trick, and when the indictment was read, asked if there was anything in the statues 'making -thegrandmother’s trick an act of swindling. He was answered that there was not, but that it came under 1 the head of swindling generally. “ I don’t know what it is,” said the judge, .‘.‘ and it- is moved to quash this indictment, because the grandmother's -trick is not in ■ the statues denounced as swindling." “ If yuur Honor please,” said the District Attorney, “ we have a witness here who understands and can play the trick, - if the Court please, we will have him show to your Honor this trick.” “Let him be called then.” “Mr Sheriff, call Kail Hurst,” said the Attorney. It w is done, and a pa« k of cards was provided. “ Can you show me the grandmother’s trick,'Mr Hurst? asked the Judge. “ If you can, do so.” Hurst took the cards, and Shuffling them up and asked the judge to turn; oyer the top card. He did.so, and said it was the knave of hearts.,, “What; did your honor say was the card 1 asked lltirst, a 4 he held ulie hatui| “ The k nave ot hearts.” “ Knaves play' tricks, your honor,” facetibusiy au-‘ sweied Hurst. “ Are you sure if - is' the knave of hearts 1” “ Yes, I know it ia.” “ Now, perhaps yomNhonor

Let the case proceed,” and e indicted was found guilty, fined, id imprisoned to the extent of the Nr.- —New Orleans Times.
