Those in the full possession 'Of their bodily health can never know, till they are in turn called on to suffer, what it is to find the powers and energies of manhood suddenly reduced by the unv nerving hand of sickness to the feeble* ness of infancy, when strength is prostrated and activity chained to a weary bed. It has been our painful duty on innumerable occasions to record instances in which men of this district, in the full vigor of life and strength have proceeded to their daily labor and, ere night, have been borne home with bodies mangled, or limbs broken. Such; is the uncertainty of health. And, knowing and feeling this, is it not a paramount duty we owe to one another to alleviate by every means in our power the sufferings of those who—less fortunate than ourselves are thus afflicted 1 We believe we but re-echo and endorse the sentiments of every right-thinking person within this district in affirming that the support of an institution for the treatment and cure of the sick is a responsibility in which (no one should decline to share. On these grounds alone—irrespective of the contemplated enjoyment—we trust that the attendance at the entertainment in aid of the funds of the local Hospital this evening, will be of a character to conclusively prove that the inhabitants of this district are, to a man, ever ready to res|»ond when appealed to on behalf of suffering humanity.
