Special attention is directed to the fjict that the contractor has altered the date from the 19th to the 20th inat for the stoppage of punt traffic on the Teremakaft river, thereby extending the time by one week for the cartage of goods previous to the punt being unworkable. At the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, before M. Price, Esq., R.M., John Cameron, of Hokitika, and Antoni Brown, of Goldsborough, were each fined 5s and costs of Court, for plying for hire in the Borough without the necessary license. The Court only inflicted a nominal fine as both defendants had, previous to the cases being Cidled, taken out licenses. The case of the Borough Council against Messrs D. Davidson and Go. for not altering their verandah in accordance with the bye-laws was adjourned for & fortnight to allow of the necessary alteration being carried out. In George and Co. v. Graham, claim, £1 18s and Miller v, Irwin, claim, £3 10s, judgment was given for the plaintiffs, in the first case for full amount and costs, and in the latter for £l, costs of Court, and witnesses expenses. Several other civil cases were adjourned for the production of additional evidence. On reference to our advertising columns it will be seen that the Rev. W. Heaving-. ham Root, of Greymouth, will deliver °a lecture in the Theatre Royal, on Friday the 24th inst., on “ The National Songs of England, Scotland, and Ireland.” The rev. gentleman, in delivering this lecture, has in view the highly laudable and worthy object of augmenting the funds of tile Presbyterian Sunday school library. When we state that this library, consisting of over 200 volumes, has .been in existence nearly two years, and that during
that time it has been freely opened to the ! children of all denominations who might ! require the use of books therefrom, we : can but reasonably suppose that in this, j the first instance in which assistance has ! been asked on its behalf from the public, j they will cordially and generally respond, ; and that our views will be borne out by a I crowded house on Friday next. We are requested to state that the programme in aid of the Hospital entertainment is withdrawn for a few days pending j several material changes and additions of a nature that cannot fail to make it even more attractive and entertaining to the public than when first published. , The Australasian quotes some portions of the late speech of Colonel Whitmore to a deputation about the defence of the New Zealand ports, and says :—Whether some wag has been hoaxing the New Zealand newspapers, or those journals have been hoaxing their readers, or, finally, whether Colonel Whitmore, the Defence Minister, has been poking fun> at a respectable deputation, we cannot undertake to say. But we are willing to accept any explanation rather than believe that the Minister was in all seriousness talking to an important deputation on the subject of the defence of the ports of the colony in a style which would be descreditable to the reasoning powers of a poll-parrot. A company is about to be formed at Dunedin for the purpose of building a market covering the whole of the Southern Market Reserve. The estimated expenditure is £20,000., “ Twelve pence make one shilling, ’ said the schoolmaster. “ Now go on, sir. Twenty shillings make one what ?” ‘ 1 They make one mighty glad these times, ” replied the boy, and the teacher, who | hadn’t got his last month’s salary yet, con-! eluded the boy was about right. Mr W. Willway having sold his plant and interest in the Dyeing Business to j Mr R. Upjohn (who has become practically acquainted with the trade), begs to solicit the kiud patronage hitherto afforded him to his successor.—Mrs Upjohn announces that she is prepared to clean and dye hats, feathers* gloves, &c., in. the best style. N.B.— Gentlemen’s clothes cleaned, dyed, presse.d, and repaired on the premises.—AdVt.
