[FROM THE ARGUS.] Adelaide, December 31. A man named Gadagher was conv milted for trial for setting fire to a house. The evidence showed he made improper proposals to a woman while her hnsbana was away, and, being refused, set fire to the house out of revenge. A disturbance occurred at a Catholic picnic at Wallaroo, owiug to the Irish harp being carried in front of the Union Jack. The Mayor of rtadina, thinking the act illegal, remonstrated, and the police subsequently interferred and were roughly used. The mau Basford, who lost the use of his speech some time sinee, is again dumb, it is supposed from drink or excitement. An absurb statement has found currency in reference to Emmett and Divert, the two Yorkshire professional cricketers, who were playing in Lord Harris's English team. It is broadly asserted that they sold the recent match with the Australians, which was won by the latter with ten wickets to spare, and that having arranged with the bookmakers that the English team should lose the match, they took care by their play to bring about this pre* HiTiuijred result. This allegation is absolutely" untrue, as the match was played and won on its merits, This is freely admitted by both sides.
