Wellington, January 7. In the Supreme Court this morning, James Murphy, who last night was found guilty of attempted rape on a little girl, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, and one whipping of 25 lashes. George Webb, for forgery, was sentenced to 12 months’, and William Watson, for robbery, to three years’ imprisonment, with“ hard labor. The Grand Jury intend making a presentiment with the object of inducing steps to be taken by which women who attempt suicide through domestic troubles need not be compelled to attend at the Supreme Court.

The “supers” engaged by Ringold at the Imperial Opera House struck last night, because the management would not give each a couple of free passes to the Theatre.

The question of free passes on railways to newspaper reporters is still undecided, though certain newspaper proprietors have made representations to the Government on the matter.

In view of a visit from an English team of footballers, the Wellington footballers have resolved to telegraph to Auckland that they were prepared to guarantee £2OO towards their expenses.

January 8. In the Supreme Court, in the case of Arthur L. Sweet, charged with forging a cheque, the jury, alter a long absence, disagreed, and at a late hour last night, it being found they still disagreed, tefreshmeats were ordered for them and they were locked up for the night. On the Court being opened this morning, it was found they still disagreed, and they were discharged and the case ordered to be again put on the list. Charles Schmidt, for robbing Robert Cooper at th ? Empire Hotel, was sentenced to three years, The Chief Justice characterised the case as a very bad one, there being an entire absence of the usual inducements to robbery, inasmuch as the prisoner was of temperate habits, ami with a consideiable sum of money in the Government savings bank. Tiie Jn lge ordered that the money found amongst prisoners personal effects, some .£BO, should be given to the prosecutor : but said that prisoner’s money in the savings bank could not be touched, Kate Dames, for attempt at suicide, wis discharged, her husband becoming responsible in his own recognaisances for her future appearance before the C mil, if desired.

The Government have not finally decided what course to adopt regarding the convict Walsh but it is expected the untter will be considered in Cabinet to-lav.
