The first coach on the new mail contract between here and Christchurch left the Kumara Hotel for Goodfellows via the Loopline at ' 0 o’clock this morning. There were two passengers and a heavy mail. The inward coach is expected here to-morrow evening should the roads and rivers be in a favorable state. The Children’s Treat Committee will meet at the Town Hall this evening, at 8 o’clock punctually, and as the business is the settling of all matters in connection with the late picnic, a full attendance of the members is requested. A match will take place in the M iin street to-morrow afternoon, at four o'clock, between Messrs Hoyle and Everett, the former having backed himself to run 100 yards while the latter runs 50 yards carrying an list.-man on his back. The stakes, £lO a-side have been deposited with the late honorary secretary to the Sports Committee. Although both men are in favor the match is considei’ed equal, and no odds can be obtained on either side. At its conclusion a novelty in this locality—an egg race—will take place, which should prove highly interesting. The examination of candidates for Scholarship in the Westland Educational District will take place at All Saints school-room, Hokitika, on Tuesday next. Oar local marksmen, t iking advantage of the splendid weather, intend firing another handicap rifle match to-morrow, and we are requested to state that the handicap can be seen at Mr Hannah’s, Seddon street, where entries will be received tills evening.
A meeting of the Sports Committee will be held on Monday evening next, at the Buck’s Head H »tel, and all accounts against them are required to be sent in to the secretary before noon of that day. _ For miraculous cures by the use of Eucalypti Extract, read fourth page.— [Aim-.]

CANTERBURY V. BALLARAT. Melbourne, December IG. The Canterbury cricketers arrived this evening at T. 30 o’clock. They play Ballarat to-morrow. December 27. The Canterbury team are playing Ballarat. New Zealand) first innings, 131 ; Ballarat, 42 runs. Second innings, Ballarat, 53, and none out. December 29. The Canterbury cricketers won the match against Ballarat by eight wickets. LORD HARRIS’S ELEVEN Y. FIFTEEN OF VICTORIA. Melbourne, December 26. The English Eleven have commenced their match with the Fifteen of Victoria. The latter went in first and kept the wickets all day. When the stumps wei’e drawn twelve wickets were down for 288 runs, Campbell making the top score of 128. The weather was splendid. December 27. The Fifteen in their first innings made 315 runs. The Eleven have eight wickets down for 304. The batting was grand, Mr Lucas made 90, Hr Boyle 78. December 28. The first innings of Lord Harris’s Eleven closed for 331. The Victorian Fifteen in their second innings scored 241. The game ended in a draw. January 2. English v, Australian Eleven Fiist innings, English, 115; Australian Eleven 95, with a loss of 3 wickets.
