THE PASSING YEAR.
Another year is drawing to a cloae t Another drop falls on the sea of time } And oh ! to many thousands what regrets Must it leave.-behind ! " Thoughts of bygone follies Will intrude]'>. Of golden hours misspent, perchance of fond And dear ones far how broken, High hopes for over doomed to perish; Fair ambitions dreams scattered to the
windß, The bloom of life departed, and old age Greying hard upon them.
Another year is passing from ditt view, Another step towards the closing scene } As flows the stream to meet the
ocean, So year on year rolls on and onward . As if in cool determination To press with iron hand each thing of life, Until there crushed and laid low in the, dust. ' • ' , Another year, a new one, Is at hand, And with it mild the sun-beama gluten j overhead; The elemental War has ceased; the tempest Is at restj e'en darkening clouds have hidj As if in shame. And shall We, from those signs* a lessen* take? Meet enemies at peace? grasp hands in. friendship?. Form stern resolve to Well improve the future, ;■•■■- And throw the past into black oblivion ? Or shall we, in the usual way, plod on Without a thought or care, until the bark That's borne us so far safely through shall strike Some unseen rock, and launch us in our last - Eternal sleep 1 We hope notr Nosptftu - Kumara* 30th Dec, 1878.
