The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. MONDAY, DECEMBER 30, 1878.

One of the coolest and moat barefaced pieces of plagiarism and effrontery of a journalistic character ever perpetrated must be credited to the honor of our Hokitika evening contemporary- the Star of the 27th instant, as his leading column of ; that date contains a critique on the .performance of the Harts Operetta Company as written by -uV-on the reappearance, of those talented artistes here, and. quietly appropriated from o«r issue of the 21st. Had our contemporary in common courtesy acknowledged us, even though indistinctly, in the matter, we should have had little ground for complaint, but;-when a journal profesaes' to give an ooimon on the merits of a public entertainment, aiicl in V doinir republishes a notice of one of its contemporaries

some twenty miles distant, we opine that the object it has in view is thereby frustrated, as the public will naturally conclude that the critique is not bona fide, but supplied by those interested therein. The meeting of the Children's Treat Committee which is to take place at the Town Hall this evening, will be the last prior to the festive day, and therefore it is intended to-night to complete all arrangements for the children's picnic. It°is absolutely necessary that all members should attend this meeting, to enable the committee to apportion the respective duties of each member, and also to decide on the course to be pursued in the event of the weather continuing in its present inclement state on New Year's Day. The ordinary weekly meeting of the members of the 1.0.G.T. Lodge will take place at the Public Hall this evening, instead of the usual night. We are glad to learn that Mr Owen Roberts, who was seriously injured at the Teremakau bridge the other day, and who is now an inmate of the local Hospital, is progressing rapidly towards recovery, and that his friends may rest assured of seeing him about again shortly. The banquet to be tendered to Mr Inspector O'Donnell by the citizens of this town previous to his departure for Otago will take place this evening, at Rugg's Kujnara Hotel. His Worship the Mayor will occupy the chair, and we understand that nearly all the principal residents of the town have signified their intention of being present. The Hospital Committee have resolved to postpone the concert until Tuesday, the 31st instant.

We are requested to state that the ball advertised by Mr Hannan of the Post Office Hotel will positively take place this evening, notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather.

We Bhould Btrongly recommend parties possessing poultry to keep a vigilant eye on their respective yards, as some impudent thief, by a well-organised raid on Saturday night, succeeded in decamping with two fat geese the property of Main street residents. There can be little doubt that this goosey purloiner intends enjoying the festive season, as a Bide of bacon was missing shortly after from the house of a wellknown sporting boniface, who, had he been present, would have supplied gratuitously to the delinquent a highlyseasoned dressing wherewith to flavor his unstuffed geese.

At Luna Islands, Niagara Fallß, a young man named Charles Addington, of Buffalo, playfully lifted up the little daughter of the lady who was with him, and said " Hi, now, I am going to throw you in !" The child, with a spasmodic leap, escaped from his hands and fell into the fierce current of the river, " Oh, my God !" shouted young Addington, and he sprang in with hopeless impulse to save her. In less than a minute both these Waifs upon the rapids were borne over and mangled beneath the Falls.

As a collector of rents and taxes, named Oremond, was driving between Chaile and the railway on the South Downs he was stopped by two men and pulled out of his dogcart. Money in notes and gold amountting to £l2O was taken from him, but the footpads on leaving him presented him with a gilt-edged copy of the New Testament.

A London firm advertised recently for a " collector, work hard and wages low," and received 1800 replies, nearly all from men of apparently good education and character, many of them from gentlemen. The Constantinople Al-Jawaib, of the 14th August, says :—We are assured that a mixed company has obtained a concession for laying down a railroad between Jaffa and Jerusalem, also to construct a harbor for shipping at the former place. Mr W. Willway having sold his plant and interest in the Dyeing Business to Mb. R. Upjohn (who has become practically acquainted with the trade), begs to solicit the kind patronage hitherto afforded him to his successor.—Mrs Upjohn announces that she is prepared to clean and dye hats, feathers, gloves, &c, in the best style. N.B.—Gentlemen's clothes cleaned, dyed, pressed, and repaired on the premisee.—AdVt. For miraculous cures by the use of Eucalypti Extract, read fourth page.— [Aovt.]
