BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Thd annual nieeting of the Bdrodgh Council was held at the Town Stall at noon yesterday. Present Mr St; J. Seddon, Mayor (in the chairjij and,. Councillors' Campbell, Cornfoot* Hannah) Pollock, O’Hara, King, and Uungari:' The Mayor Said that it was his pleasixig duty, being the annual meeting df the Council, to introduce the newly-elected Mayors and to now vacate his seat in favor of his successor. Itl introducing Mr Blake, he trusted that the same courtesy < would be extended to him by the’ as he (the Speaker) had always received during his terin Of office. He had little doubt but that they wo’uld hud his successor would catty out the business of the Council equally as well as himself. The newly-electbd Mayor here ; made the usual declaration, and took the chair, and Mr Seddoji, after also making a' declaration as Councillor,- took his seat at the table. ... Mr H. Blake, in addressing the Coriftcit said he trusted that what his predecessor had predicted of Irfrft he would fulfil, but they could depend lt6 should do hie utmost to fill the position He then occupied with credit.- He had been told' that those .who tried to serve the public interests had butfew friends’ in the beginning, and that iri the end they had far less ; but he" hoped that in any matter of routine in whicli he mjght be deficient, the Council Would lend him! their assistance! If aft arfy time he 1 had to make some' unpleasant rerirarks in the course of business, id, the public interests, as ; he Wilis’ a plain speaker they wobld understand him, as' he hoped to sed the business of the Council carried oh without so much red tapeisrir. He trusted the Council would take these few remarks' in the spirit hi which they were made and he’claimed their indulgence—[HeWr, hear]. The minutes of the last meeting’ were' read and confirmed. The outWar’d correspohdeftcfe was read and approved of, and the inward read arid received. . A letter' from Mr W. H Hairisv wab considered, and it was resolved that a sum not exceeding £S > be expended on the victoria Hotel, under the supervision* of the Borough Surveyor.- • .
