A special meeting of the Children's Treat Committee will be held in the Town Hall this evening, at 8 o'clock punctually. As the business is very im]x>rtant, it is highly desirable' that all members should attend. On our fourth page we publish several telegrams that were unavoidably held over from! yesterday. The animal meeting of the Borough Council was- held to'-day in the Town Hall, at noon, at which the newty-elected Mayor (Edwin Blake, Esq.,) was duly installed into office by his predecessor, in a highly complimentary manner. The Hospital Committee held their usual fortnightly meeting at the' Secretary's office last evening. The chief busi--rcesa transacted was the arrangement of the programme for the entertainment on! Boxing night, in aid of the funds of the local Hospital. The programme, which is - of a most diverse character, including, as it does the great Davenport trick, ap--pears in another column. An election of three qualified j to fill the vacancies in the Arahura Road- j j Board will be held, if necessary, on the' on the 2nd of January next. The nomi-' I nation of candidates will take place at noon, at the Road Board office, StaffordTown, on Monday, the 23rd inst. A numerously-attended meeting of Volunteers and civilians was held at Gil--bert Stewart's Hotel last evening, for the purpose of forming a local committee in I connection withj the New Zealand Rifle j Association. The Chairman (Lieut. | Munyard) as- member of the Executive^ Committee for the Wesfcland District, ex- | plained the nature of the Association, its- ! rules- and advantages, ;*5 also the neces- ! any steps to btr taken in the formation* lof a-local committee. Fifteen gentlemen 1 I having joined the association, nominations l ' for the local committee, which,. j «tfter a ballot* resulted in Messrs Palamon- | tain, Matchett, Smith,. Marshall, audj Sampson being' elected. The Committee I then appointed Mr Palauu.-rvtain Secretary, ; and we are requested to state that any I person wishing to join the Association I can obtain full information on application ' to that gentleman.
A meeting of the Committee of the Kumara Literary Institute was held last evening. Mr Birch (Vice-President) in the chair. A letter from Mr Furby tendering his resignation as Honorary Treasurer on account of private business, -was read and accepted with regret, and Mr G. Gordon was unanimously elected to fill the vacancy. Messrs Blackburn and R. W. Morgan were elected committee men in the places of Messrs H. J. Wylde and King, resigned (who have left Kumara). Sundry accounts were passed for payment, and other routine business having been transacted the meeting adjourned. It is a singular coincidence that the husband and daughter of our beloved Queen both died on the Bame day of the month, as Prince Albert died on the 14th day of December, 1861, and the Princess Alice on the same date in this year. Telegraphic news from China, via Cooktown, states that—" Hoffman, Clerk of the Court at Hong Kong was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment for embezzlement.—A mutiny occurred at Takin Son Chow, the second -City of Hainan. It was besieged -by 20,000 rebels. The officials fled from the city> which was pillaged, and numbers . massacred.— Arnold Pagiri, an American geologist, has been engaged to.prospect North China for gold." Mb W. Will-way having sold his plant and interest in the Dyeing Business to Mr R. Upjohn (who has become practically acquainted with the trade), begs to solicit the kind patronage hitherto afforded him to his successor.—Mrs Upjohn announces that she is prepared to clean and dye hats, feathers, gloves, &c, in the best style. clothes cleaned, dye'd, pressed, and repaired on the premises.—Advt.
