The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1878.

We are compelled to hold over several Wellington and Auckland telegrams. The Zealandia arrived with the European mail via San Francisco, at Auckland, just as we were going to press. She is one day in advance of contract time. The Hospital Committee will hold their usual fortnightly meeting at the Secretary’s office this evening, at 8 o’clock, when final arrangements will be made regarding the entertainment on Boxing night in aid of the funds. j The meeting which w;is to have been held last evening to form a local committee for the New Zealand Rifle Association I was postponed until this evening, as, in j consequence of it being lodge night with ; two different societies, a large number of : those who would have otherwise been ; present and had signified their intention j °f joining the Association, could not, pos- ; sibly attend. The usual parade of the , Volunteers will hot be held this evening, but the members are requested to attend the meeting to be held at Gilbert Stewart’s Hotel. A meeting of the Children’s Treat Committee was held at the Town Hall last i evening. A large number of the Cum- . mittee were present, the Rav. E. A. Scott , occupying the chair. Tenders for the | supply of meals to the children were I opened, and the tender of Mr Robertson accepted. It was resolved to call fur tenders for the right of holding four refreshment 1 booths on the ground, but with the provi--1 siou tliat no intoxicating drinks be allowed

therein. The question of the engagement of the Dillman’s Town Band was deferred until the next meeting. A sub-committee was empowered to procure the necessary articles of amusements required, and also to have half-a-dozen swings erected on the ground. After some business of a formal nature the meeting adjourned until that day week. We hear that a large number of defaulting ratepayers are to be introduced to the Resident Magistrate on Thursday next, at the usual hour. It would be well that others, who, perhaps from neglect or some other cause, have neglected to pay their rates, should take this hint and do so at once, as the costs of each case vastly exceeds the amount sued for*

Afser the long dearth of any legitimate amusement of a professional character in this town, the re-appearance of Mr and Mrs Hart’s Operetta Company is now announced at the Theatre Royal, on Friday evening next. Although these talented artists are not unknown to Kuraara audiences, we observe by our exchanges that since their former appearance here they have greatly augmented their attractions, and, that at the various places where their “ Happy Hours” have been given, they have received the most flattering notices.
