A meeting of the Borough Council took I place at the Town Hall last evening, but i as the meeting adjourned after transact- j ing some of the business until two o'clock j this afternoon, our report of the proceed.- ! ings is withheld. ! The following telegram received, by Mr j E. Barff, M.H.R., and which appears in the leading columns of our Hokitika evening contemporary, affords some grounds i for the statement that the Hokitika and Greymouth Railway will shortly be com- ■ meneed :—" The Minister when South. ', gave directions to have about seven or ' eight miles of railway from Grey advertised | as soon as possible, and as the plans are ', ready, or nearly so, tenders Avill be got j out immediately ; the cost of this section, j with the expenditure now going on at! Hokitika, preparing the proposed station J site will pretty well absorb the vote for the j current ye*r.—John Knowles." : The drawing of Tonic's Album Sweep on j the Champion Race will take place at I Greymouth this evening, and the winning ' numbers will appear in tomorrows issue. ' As so many persons were disappointed in not being able to procure tickets in this sweep, the originator hivj issued another on the same race, tickets of which can be procured at Gilbert Sty wart's Hotel. A meeting of Volunteers and civilians was held in Hpkitika last evening (Captain Bonar in the chair) for the purpose of enrolling members for the New Zealand Rifle Association. The meeting was well attended, and twenty members were enrolled. We imderst-ind thai, a meeting with a similar object in view will be held here next Monday evening, and as we possess many good marksmen, both civilians and otherwise, there should be a good attendance. I The Managing Committee of the South j Canterbury Jockey Club have accepted a tender for the construction of the new grand stand on the racecourse. The cost of the building will be £I2OO, and will be commenced at once. The Rev. J. J. Westwood has just ac- \ complished a 500 miles journey inland { from Rockhampton, Queensland, He is
