Christchtjrch, December 9. Three boys, Joseph and Charles Wade and Fredrick Ohishlom, are now before the Magistrate charged with setting fire lo the kerosene store yesterday. It was unanimously resolved at a public meeting this afteroou to create a scholarship in connection with the New Zealand University as a memorial of the late Sir John Richaidson, and a committee was appointed who will correspond with the. centres of poplulacion with a view to raising funds for establishing such a scholarship. LATEST UNPUBLISHED. ■" MURDER OF CAPTAIN MOLLER. Auckland, December 10. The brigantiiie Meg Merrilees arrived at »ix o'clock last evening from the island. Considerable excitement was caused when it became known that Captain Moller, well kuowii in Auckland had been murdered several weeks a-jo, and that Messrs M'Arthur and Co.'s truder,' named Thomas Reynolds, was arrested, charged with the crime. The circumstances are alleged be as fo'lows : —The morning after the brigantiiie arrived at Butawawaha, they began taking in eopm for M'Artlmi- and'(Jo. Tlu Captain and Reynolds c >uld not agree. Captain Moller was walking about ashore with a gun loaded with shot, The captain was about to take a case of l.eef, when Reynolds said "If you touch, you are a dead man," theu fired at Captain Mollor. The shot took effect in his left arm, aud the vessel proceeded to the Ebon Marshall Group to find a doctor. Next morning the captain was taken ashore to the American Mission, when he expired in great a-»ony. Reynolds was arrested after the shooting, by Messrs Brewn, Disney, and Grant, and brought to Auckland and handed to the police. He will be brought up dt the Court to-morrow. On the arrival of the schooner- Moller's wifo vva» ignorant of his death, and met the vessel in the stream, when a harrowscene ensued. Napier, December 10. In the Supreme Court, the man Charles Stewart, for stealiug jewelry contained in a registered post-office packet addre>sed to Charles Stuart, the jury found the prisoner received the packet without felonious intent, but afterwards retained it with felonious intent. Judge Gillies ruled that that was a verdict of not guilty, under the section of the Act under which the prisoner was indicted. Had he been indicted under the 46th section instead of the 41st, the finding ot the jury would amount to a verdict of guilty. It might be sa.d there Was a failure of of justice through the prisoner being wrongly indicted. There is another charge against the prisoner of detaining the letter after its being demanded from lain. Wellington, December 10.
