The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. MONDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1878.

A public meeting will be held at Dillman's Town on-Thursday evening to consider the action of the Government anent the Kumara-Kawhaka Water Race. As this is a question that will eventually affect the mining community of this district in a manner that may prove highly injurious to their interests if steps are not immediately taken to lodge the requisite objections, it is to be hoped that there will be a full attendance of those interested.

A number of the'friends and supporters of A. R. Cruimless, Esq., tlie Chairman 6f the' (1 i-isy- County Ooniicif, and also 'Messrs Cmningand'Diingan as his old'colleagues it the Provincial CV.mc'l, assembled at the Kumara Hotel last evening, to congratulate him on his dual re-election to office. Mr Cuming .'occupied the chair,

i and proposed the health of their visitor in j the most laudatory terms, which was heartily responded to by those present. A number of other toasts were proposed, the "Mining Interests," by Mr JDungan ; " The Press," by Mr Cuming ; and "The Host, and little hosts," by Mr Guinness ; which were heartily responded to, and Mr Cuming, by request, favored the company with the recitation of " William Tell, in a most effective manner. The proceedings terminated shortly before eleven o'clock. There is little doubt that in the formation of a new street the residents and those who are compelled through business to travel over it must necessarily be subject to some slight degree of inconvenience, but, at the same time some provision should be made by either the contractors or authorities to enable supplies to be brought into the town without serious loss to the carriers. Yesterday a sixhorse wagggon heavily laden with goods from Hokitika, when opposite Mulvihill's Hotel in the Main street was necessitated to unload through the off wheels sinking to their axles, and it was only with the greatest difficulty the horses were enabled to extricate the empty waggon. Through this accident the driver was delayed over two hours and also compelled to obtain the use of several drays, an expense which naturally falls on the unfortunate owner of the waggon. The Committee appointed by the Borough Council to arrange as to the re» moval of that portion of Mr Hanna's house that projects over the footpath in Seddon street, have accepted the tender of Mr M'Laren for the work, the price beinw £l9. We are glad to observe that a work of material benefit to the residents of the Teremakau Beach is contemplated by the County Council, as tenders are called for the construction of a track from the end of the Kumara Tramway to the beach. Tenders will close on the 18th instant, i.t the County Chairman's office, Hokitika, where plans and specifications can be seen. Tenders will be received up to Thura- j day next, at the County Chairman's office, j Hokitika, from persons willing to make i the assessment of the rateable property in the different ridings of the County. The ridings may be tendered for separately or conjointly. A 'grand Masonic fete was to take place on October 24 at Paris, in the great hall of Trooadero, under the presidency of M. Cremieux, Senator, and formerly i Minister, at whioli some of the principal | people in the capital will be present. This j fete is offered to all foreign Freemasons j by the members of the Supreme Council of the A. and A. Scottish Rite of Freemasonry for France and her dependencies. In consequence of the dissatisfaction experienced by the ladies of Kumara. and j district in not being able to get their Dresses made in time for the coming, festival, of Christmas,. D.
