The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1878.

The thorough development of the resources of any goldfield is a matter that should chiefly occupy the attention not only of the mining community located thereon, but more especially the mercantile interests, as in its development often lies their success. On this goldfield, for instance, we find that in the opinion of many thoroughly practical miners, the precious pietal is supposed to exist at far lower levels than have been worked up to the present time ; and yet, strange to say, although this opinion is very generally endorsed, uo decided action appears to have been taken to test its value or otherwise. At a meeting recently held relative to the prospecting of this district, one of the speakers, in referring to the sinking for the main bottom, said in effect that several residents, on hearing that a shaft was to he sunk on the lead, with this object in view, iuuned lately offered to supply either pecuniary or active assistance; Subsequently a committee was formed-to carry out this most desirable object, and subscriptions were collected and transmitted to the Prospecting Association. As this most useful body were precluded from taking action in this, locality under the Government existing restrictive regulations, they consequently declined their assistance and the subscriptions collected for that purpose. At this stage the matter remains, and is it, we ask, beneficial to the general interests of the district, that such is the case % Here is a goldfield in which the discovery of the auriferous metal at a low level would prove of inestimable benefit to every individual engaged thereon ; and yet, for lack of energy, want of unity, and the general idea that what is everybody’s business is uo one’s, the question at issue still remains in statu quo. We have no hesitation in affirming that the matter is one. of paramount importance to the district, ami one in which it behoves the community, one and all, td take immediate and decided action. Let a thoroughly practical committee of miners—tneii possessing not only intelligence but energy—he established ; let the business portion of the community provide the necessary funds;

and we have little doubt but that the result will eventuate in the solution of this question, and the development of the, at present, undiscovered riches of this district.
