As many of our subscribers holding horses in the various sweeps are naturally anxious to know if said horses were starters or otherwise we publish in another column a full report of the great race for the Melbourne C.ip, as supplied by telegraph to the CliristehuTch Press.
Another candidate for the mayoralty is announced, as Mr Peter Dungan intimates by advertisement in another column that he intends offering his services to the electors. We are requested to remind candidates that the nomination takes place next Saturday and that the Rehiring officer will be in attendance at the Borough Chambers up to noon. A cheque was received by the Secretary of the Hospital Coaimiltee yesterday from the Government for £lO7 19s 6d the amount due for the September quarter's subsidy. The contractors for the new building also received £l5O as a progress payment on their work.
At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning before W. H. Revell, Esq., R.M., Jane Mulligan, was, after being questioned by the Court, remanded to Hokitika for medical examination, as although the prisoner was charged with drunkenness, tiie charge was subsequently withdrawn on the application of the Inspector of Police, the accused exhibiting *igns of mental derangement. Barbara Weldon was fined 20s or 48 ho ;rs' imprisonment, for drunkenness ; and an un- ! fortunate elector who had made to free ! yesterday was fined 10s or 24 hours. A , civil case of Jameson v. Stewart, iu which : Mr Perkins appeared for the plaintiff, was adaim of £IG 17s on a judgment sum- ! mons. The defendant, who w.ts contraci *6r for the Dillmaa's TWn road, did not appear, and after evidence had been given ■ to the Court of his ability to settle the
claim, an order was made for its immediated payment, in default three months' imprisonment. In the case of the Trustees of Roulßton and M'llroy v. Corrigan, a claim of £3 15s Bd, judgment was given for plaintiff with costs of Court.
At an entertainment shortly to be given in aid of the Hospital funds, we understand the great ..Davenport trick will be attempted, to decide a wager, laid, between two gentlemen of this town. One of the parties in question has backed himself to be tied in a chair on any public stage, and in any manner possible, with a rope, and that he will release himself iu five minutes ; a committee of six persons to superintend and see the matter fairly carried out. The stake at issue is £2O.
Lieutenant-General Henry J. Warre, C. 8., who commanded the 57 th Reigment in New Zealand, has been appointed commander-in-chief of the Bombay army. D. Davidson and Co. beg to'announce the arrival of the largest stock ever imported to the West Coast from the leading markets, comprising all the newest fashions in ladies' trimmed hats, and general millinery, fancy dress materials, colored and black silks, hosiery, and gloves, mantles, fischues, and umbrellas ; men's, youths', and boys' clothing; straw and felt hats, boots and shoes, &c.
