CONSULTATION CHESS MATCH, STAFFORD V. KUMARA.

The consultation chess match between Stafford Town and Kumara, three players a side, was resumed last night at the Kumara Hotel, Main road, where HostRugg, as on the previous meeting, kindly furnished two rooms for the convenience (if the contending parties, the Stafford players occupying one room, and the Kumara team the other. Mr Palmer (of Dillman’s Town) acted as umpire for Stafford, and Mr Ball for Kumara. Mr Blackburn kindly delivered the messages to fro, and Messrs Horneman and Gordon noted the moves and the time. It will be remembered that a dispute arose in the game at the 29th move of White (Kumara), in consequence of the Stafford players insisting upon interpreting the move to their own particular advantage because it. bore two meanings. To this, of course, the Kumara players objected, stating that the move sent was obvious to any tyro in chess, and besides, there was no rule in the conditions they were playing under which allowed of their oppo-j neats taking any. such advantage. The point in dispute it,was then agreed should be referred to the chess editor of the Australasian, to be final and binding oh both, parties, and the game then .proceeded.

After four or five moves- had been made on each side, the Stafford players sent an exactly similar insufficiently described taove. Both sides being then on an equal footing in this respect, the Kumara men offered to, resume the game from the move where the first omission took place, but, Stafford objecting, the game was abandoned by both parties until the decision of the authority referred to arrived. That decision was published in our issue of Friday last, and was, as chessplayers understand, a twofold verdict for Kumara. The gone last night was resumed then from the 20thmove, where the first dispute arose, which proved a great benefit to Stafford who were enabled to correct tl4eir previous course following move 29, and. so save the loss of a pawn, which had been clearly won from them. And now, in their eagerness for attack, the Kumara men neglected to make all safe at home, and lost the game which they should from this time have at least drawn.
