The concert for the establishment of a Library in connection with the Kumara Literary Institute will take place at the Theatre Royal this evening. The programme presents a very choice selection of songs, duetts, and recitations, and cannot fail to prove both attractive and enjoyable. There is one item in the programme— " Chinese Delineations " we understand, which of it itself is sufficient to draw a good house, and, as the gentleman undertaking that portion of the entertainment hails from the flowery land they will doubtless receive full justice by him on this occasion. The appearance of the weather, although far from favorable, will not, we trust, deter the public from' attending, as the object in view will be of material benefit both to the residents of this town and the adjacent localities. The formation of a Library in connection with the Institute would not only foster the love of literature, but prove an inestimable boon to those who often find their 1 spare hours hang heavily. We sincerely wish the Committee success in these their efforts in so laudable an undertaking. At the Resident Magistrates' Court this morning before M. Price Esq., R.M., the case of Francis Forster for making a false declaration before the Registrar of Marriages was comirienced, but owing to the absence of a material witness, the case was adjourned. A full report of the business of the Court will appear to-morrow. The quarterly meeting of the Greenstone Licensing Bench will be held at the Resident Magistrate's Court, Greenstone, at noon on Tuesday, the 3rd day of December. Applications must be lodged with the Clerk of the Court before the 11th pfoximo. It will be seen by our" telegrams received this afternoon that tile Appropriation Bill was passed in the House last evening, after an unseemly passage of words between thepresent and late Premiers. In tße Supplementary Estimates, the sum of £3500 is set down for additional Snidei' ammunition, and £2OOO for the Volunteer Rifle Association ; also £SOO for railway fares for Volunteers and fire brigades-
The drawing of Jones's Sweep on the Melbourne Cup was postponed from last evening to to-morrow night. Hughes's Annual Festival will be positively drawn ! this evening at Westport. i The old friends of Mr T. Seldus afe in- ! vited to a farewell ball at his Rooms, I Seddon street, this evening previous to j his departure from the Coast. Although I Mr Selous during his residence in this j town has not identified himself with j public matters, his genial and wellknown upright character has gained for him the esteem of his fellow citizens and his departure will be regretted by a large circle of friends. Aa a resident of Ross for over twelve years, and also being intimately connected with the Volunteer movement since its formation on the Coast, his acquaintances, especially amongst the mining community, are numerous, and we may safely predict that his farewell ball to-night will be well patronised. Inspector Acheson, of the Wellington police force, has been transferred to Nelson by order of the Government, in consequence of the report of the Committee on the Wellington Police. The education question is causing some little stir in Victoria (the Press Agency states) owing principally to the exertions of the Romaii Catholics to obtain a separate grant for their schools. The Minister of Education, in proposing an estimate in the House last said that the Catholic clergy were responsible for the whole of the agitation, and that the Catholic laity were quite, satisfied with the working of the present Act, if they were let alone and not continuously stirred up to action by the clergy. The debate so far has been well sustained. The Government expect to close the session shortly, and there are signs of the approaching end. From the same authority we learri that both Houses have appointed committees of three to confer on the Reform Bill, but that no one is Very sanguine of any result being gained. The members appointed are—For the Council: Sir Ohas. Sladen, Dr Hearn, and Mr R. Saunderson, and for the Assembly: Mr Berry, Sir B; O'Loughlin, and Professor Peterson, are holding extreme views on one side and the other. All parties are seemingly agreed that some arrangements should be arrived at by which the question can be settled amongst themselves instead of referring it Home. The following description of the Ithyber" Pass, is taken from Sir George Lawrence's Reminiscences :—The Khyber Pass, which the Viceroy of India will probably annex to British India, is a narrow defiie } twentyeight miles long, between lofty, perpendicular hills*, thefoadj during its entire length, passing ovdr rocks and boulders, which render a speedy advance or" retrfeat of any body of irien impossible. The 1 heights On either side entirely command .the are sharped so that they cannot withoutrjgreftr."cßffic"nlty. BeTjcaW. They are also perforated with numbers" of natural caves, the Secure haunts of the savage robbers who have for ages hold possession of the Pass\ The crests of the hills are further defended by stone breastworks, called snnghal, A small valley, cialled Gurhee Lall Beg, abdut six miles from the western entrance to the Pass, is the only open spot to bti met with during the entire distance!
