It is thought here that there is a strong probability that the Marquis of Normanby will be the new Governor of Victoria. It is considered more than likely that Sir Hercules Robinson will go to the Cape, and Sir Bartle Frere" be moved to Madras. It is understood that Lord Normanby would have much preferred Sydney, and that he was not particularly anxious for the appointment to Victoria. It seems as if the Government intended a policy of isolation for this .Colony, so far as the mail service is concerned, and that tenders will be accepted for a direct service between Melbourne and England. The collections on Hospital Sunday and Saturday were about up to last year's. In many of the churches there was a large increase. Three of the defendants in the embracery case of attempting to influence jurors were sent for trial, the fourth 'defendant, Mann, was discharged, there being no evidence against him. A company is in course of formation with a capital of £20,000, for the establishment of coffee ta-verns in the metropolis and suburbs. John S. His defalcations so far amount to £I7OO, and he has apparently added the crime of forgery to that of embezzlement. Alexander Stevens, of the firm of Stevens and Elliot, coach builders, who was much injured at a fire which destroyed his residence, died from the Effects of the injuries received.
