The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1878.

In response to the requisition of several of the bnrghesses of Kumara, his Worship the Mayor has convened a public meeting for this evening, to. take place at the Town Hall, " for thp purpose of. considering the present aspect of affairs re lifting the Education Reserve." In June last, at a largely-attended meeting relative to the same question, the following resolution was unanimously passed—" That in the opinion of this meeting the time has arrived when the long-standing grievance of the Education Reserve, situated within the Borough of Kumara, should -be cancelled or lifted without further delay, and that the section-holders should be allowed the privilege of purchasing the same at a reasonable price." In accordance with that resolution a petition was prepared, and after being numerously signed by the residents of this town, was transmitted to the Colonial Secretary to lay before the Government, in the hopes they would take immediate action in the matter. At subsequent meetings of the Reserve Committee the question has been repeatedly urged on the Government, and eventually, when the session commenced the matter was left in the hands of the representatives of this district in the House, to take action thereon. A telegram received from E. Barff, Esq., M. H.R., on the 25th inst., iuformed us that " The Government have referred the Education Reserves question to the Chief Commissioner of Crown Lands at Hokitika, for his report and recommendation as to carrying out what is required." In the meanwhile the occupants of sections have been called on to pay the rents now due ; and it is to take this matter into consideration : that the meeting has been called for this evening, when we have no doubt the whole question will be thoroughly ventilated.
