The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1878.

The inward European mail via San Francisco arrived at Auckland last evening. Our telegrams to-day are full of accounts of disasters, in the home country, on land and water. We are compelled to hold over Parliamentary intelligence. The second reading of the Railways Construction Bill was moved in the House of Representatives last night by Mr Mac-' andrew, excepting the line from Amberley to Cooks Straits. Mr Curtis moved that the bill be read that day six months, in which he was supported by all the Nelson members. The debate was adjourned at half-past one o'clock this morning, when the House rose.

The drawing of Tonlcs's Albion Sweep took place at Greymouth last evening with its usual punctuality and correctness, the winning numbers of which appear in another column of this paper. The subscribers in this town were more fortunate than usual in securing horses as the following were drawn from tickets disposed of by Mr Gilbert Stewart:—Democrat, Glenormiston, Nuraa Pompilius, Viscount, and St. Andrew, the first three having accepted. Another party drew Macaroni, also an acceptor, but where the winning ticket was purchased from we did not learn. •

The drawing of Jones's Sweep on the Melbourne Cup will positively take place on the 30th inst., the tickets being nearly all disposed of, and for the few remaining in this town early application will be necessary.

j Sweeps on horse races have been for J sometime the order of the day, but on ra- | ference to our advertising columns it will | be Been that a sweep of a different charj acter is now announced, the prize being the Clarendon Hotel, furnished thoroughly throughout, with bar fittings and all the necessaries appertaining to a first-class house, enabling the fortunate winner to ■ commence, business without any further | outlay. From the fact of the present pro- , prietor, Mr O'Hara, having identified him- | self with every matter of public interest affecting the welfare of this town since its formation, he has secured numerous friends who will regret to learn of his intended departure, but who will no doubt at thesame time for the sake of "auld acquaintance" take up shares in the Clarendon Hotel Sweep, and thereby enable him to dispose of his business here, and leave , for Christchurch where, we understand, J he has secured a first-class opening.
