[press agency.] ' Invercargill, September 16. A land furore is raging here. Speculators from Dunedin and Christchurch are buying up at fancy prices. A great deal of laud, both Crown and private has changed hands- during this week, and it is said that the Waste Lands Board will be deluged with applicacations this week. As a rule buyers ate agreeably surprised with the quality of the land —The steamer Oretl grounded whilst entering New River, yesterday afternoon and remained hard and fast all night on a mud bank. She did not get otf this morning, and it is reported she is seriously injmed. A report came to the police, this morning, of a horrid murder at Waikawa, A man named Welsh is said to have killed his wife. Particulars not to hand. Wellington, September 16. The Gazette to-night will contain regulations altering the rates of postage.
Any articles of merchandise or manufactured not dangerous may be sent by parcel post, also seed, cuttings, bulbs, roots. Postage one penny per two ounces. Plana and manuscript intended for publication may be sent at book post rates. No book packet to be sealed or otherwise closed against inspection. Legal documents may be sent by book post. These changes are to come into force from 4th inst. Lyttelton, September 14. A smart shock of earthquake was felt here at ten minutes to five this morning. September 16. Arrived—-Alma and Cleopatra from Greymouth.
