[press agency,] Waitara, August 29. The reported loss of the schooner Kaiuma proves, after inquiry, to be without substantial foundation. Wellington, August 29. For the last couple of days there have been various rumours afloat in the lobbies- about the 'Government intending to bring down a proposal for insular’ separation. This was hinted at in an unmisfcakoahJe way by the Times, and alarm has prevailed since. Some large property sales advertised were postponed in consequence. The movement in favor of a substantial testimonial to Sir Julius Vogel is taking shape, and a majority for it is confidently spoken of. On the other side it is talked of as being merely a dodge to provide Sir J. Vogel with the means of returning to New Zealand to re-enter the political world. Christchurch, August 29. At the annual meeting of the Cham, her of Commerce, a very large number of new members were elected. The report was of a very satisfactory character and was unanimously adopted. The committee were glad to say that Lyttelton would be iu a position to undertake its defence in the event of war, and hoped that shortly there would be direct steam communication with London, as they felt that great benefit would derive therefrom ; they made passing reference to the West Coast railway and other matters, and among other things regretted with mortification that New Zealand had not been represented at the Paris Exhibition, owing to the supineness of the Government, Referring to the scarcity of trucks on the railway last year, the Chairman said he hoped they would not be subject to the same inconvenience next year. A new committee was appointed to consider the question of building a new chamber without delay.
