The Resident Magistrate’s Court was crowded this morning to . hear the case against Ellen O’Donnell, for fowl stealing, which resulted in her receiving fourteen day’s imprisonment with hard labor. Owing to pressure on our columns we aie compelled to condense our report of the case in the Police Court.
We understand that the prospectus of a large Slucing. company will be presented to the residents of this district very shortly. As we have already had very clear proof of the richness of this goldfield when worked on the sluicing system, we may reasonably expect that shares in the new company will be eagerly sought for when obtainable.'
A Daman’s Town correspondent writes as follows The fine weather is making Dillman’s Town a favorite rendezvous for the fair belles of Kumara, which no doubt (if only to see the snow-capped hills) is well worth the sixpenny ride. The township viewed now from any position has a snug and compact appearance, and every new building adds to its solidity the last being a large baking establishment, which .is a credit to both owner and contractors. A bathing establishment is a 1 so spoken of and with low charges, will no doubt be duly appreciated. A project is said to be on the topis under the “ Limited Liabdity Act” to supply another requirement suitable for all public purposes viz.; a Town Hall, which will at all times be open for the stage, dancing, or pulpit requ’-ementa.
j ELM. screw slbop Cormorant, six guns, which is. appointed to-the Ausralian station, is a composite sloop of 1124 tons and 900 h.p. She has been commissioned at Chatham, and is officered by Commander J. A. Bruce, Lieutenants 0. M. Luckraft, G. Hodgkinson, and V. F. Hughes; surgeon, F. H. Lewis ; J. Horrocks, staff; paymaster, H. B. Robinson; assistant, H. E. Bourchier.
A very handsome and valuable gold watch has been presented by the German Government to a young mandarin at Foo Chow for his zealous and effectual endeavors to bring the murderers of the master and mate of the barque Anna to justice.
Captain Paul, of the British barque Nardoo, from Sydney to Shangahi, reports having passed within 30ft. of two rocky patches not marked on any chart, private or Admiralty, not more than four to six feet under the surface of the water. The .east patch had a ripple on the waters edge). Their position may be relied on as follows; the captain thinks 26‘50 north latitude ; 12b. 20.30 east longitude. : ' ■
At the meeting of the North China branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, Dr. -Macgowan laid before the society speci-, mens of an edible cicada grub, which are found in such large quantities at the root of the sugar-cane as to be marketable. Dr. Macgowan said they were sweet and toothsome, but that recommendation did not suffice to lead any gentlemen to qualify themselves to report on the subject.
