EDUCATION.

From the report of the Minister of Education we learn that tue number of public schools in operation under the Education Boards lasi year was /30. Auckland heads the list with lb 6 ; Otago, 174; Canterbury, 121; Wellington, 79; Nelson, 65; Taranaki, ol ; Westland and Hawke’s Bay each 28 ; and Marlborough, 18. Fortyfoiu are half-time schools.

Tli' l total number of teachers employed in the schools is returned at 1,400, classified thus—Headmasters, 577 ; assistant masters, 71 ; male pupil teachers, 82 ; head mistresses, 213 ; assistant mistresses, 236; and female pupil teachers, 221. In addition to these there are 82 teachers of sewing or work-mistresses. There are 369 teachers in Canterbury; in Otago 337, Auckland 272, Wellington 147, Nelson 96, Westland 65, Hawke’s Bav 45, Taranaki 40, and Marlborough 29. The teach'-rs of sewing are in five Provincial districts—in Canterbury 36, in Auckland 24, Otago 19, Hawke’s Bay 2, Westiaud 1. SCHOLARS.
