Wellington, August 13. The question of Maintenance of Hospitals by Counties with a Government subsidy of pound for pound was fully discussed to-day, and only negatived on a division by the casting vote of the Chairman, although his other vote was with the ayes. It was resolved that auctioneers and other license fees should belong to the County in which they are collected, but if the license is used in more than one County or Borough the license fees shall be divided amongst such bodies. That when a road board shall fail to elect trustees and a govern* ing body such road district shall merge into the County. That whenever the owner of land cannot be found all rates overdue shall be charged against the land.
A committee was appointed to draw up a final report.
Wanganui, August 14. A young man named Frank Marten, was killed at the railway star ion at noon to-day, while shunting a goods carriage. Deceased was a porter, and van in between two timber trucks with the intention to couple them, and the timber protuding over the trucks caught him in the chest and back, crushing him to death directly. * °

The Chamber of-Co.mne.ce, received the following reply to the congraiula-
tory telegram “Am honored by receipt of message from Auckland ; cordially flunk Chamber of Commerce — Beaconsfield.”
The Katie Katie Harbor was sounded at the entrance and found only lift of water, Ihe Lady Jocelyn will, therefore, be towed to Tauranga, and immigrants landed here. .An application from Burt Dunedin, asking the City Council to try his scheme for deordorising and drainage, was referred to the Public Works Committee.
LATEST UNPUBLISHED. Christchurch, August 15. The public meeting held at Rangiora last night passed resolutions urging on the Government to construct a railway to the West Coast, via Amberlev.
