A slight accident occured to the road between Kumara and Diliman’s Town yesterday afternoon, a portion of it, which passes over some tunnels, falling in. A dray with timber which had only iust gone over the spot, had a narrow escape, the wheels catching on the very brink necessitating its being unloaded before it could proceed. Men were quickly at work, and we believe the damage done is now thorougly repaired. In the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning one witness informed the bench that he could get supplied with meat by asking ; but as the plaintiff came and offered to supply him, he naturally thought one volunteer was worth two pressed men” and so wave him the order. Unfortunately to-day he found that though the butcher was the volunteer he and his mate played the part of the pressed men. The inspection parade of the local Rifles was held by Lieut. Spence last evening .there was a very small attendance, as the lodge night of the Good Templars, to which many of the Volunteers belong, was held the same evening, and had no doubt a material effect in diminishing their numbers on parade.
By a notice which appears in another column it will be seen that the brewers have been compelled through the new tariff to raise the price of their'beer lid per gallon. 2
A fatal accident occurred on Thursday evening to a man known as “Harry” who had been employed by W. Smith Dairyman Upper Crossing, Arahura. Mr W 0. J. Kortegast first reported the aftair to the police. It appears (says the West Coast Times) that Mr Kortegast was .proceeding with Harry to the Upper crossing by way of Blue Spur, with a horse and spring cart. Hear the top of the hill the horse stopped and commenced to back, when Harry jumped out and endeavoured to start the horse up the hill again. The horse and dray however went over the terrace falling a distance of about thirty feet; the man falling back likewise for a distance of about twenty feet. Mr Kartell 3 '’ at once ran to his assistance, and with the md of two men named Win. Griffiths and Fredrick Baker, carried him to Bovs’s Jdotel. It was then .seven o'clock, and Mr Kortegast and Mr Does both offevolto go for a doctor, but U any thought there was no occasion to do so, as lie would bo all ngnt in the morning. ILj remained there all night, and during tlio night'ho asked to be taken to the hospital in the
morning. morning, however, about nine o clocr, when they were preparing to coin ey him to the hospital, the poor fellow died. An inquest will be held to-day. A v ell-merited though decidedly unintentional compliment was paid to the local Fire Brigade this morning, by the defendant in a chimney-blazing case, in which he said he could not account for the instantaneous action of the brigade or the ringing of the bell, as the fire was barely perceptible a minute.
