DISTRICT COURT FOR KUMARA
[to the editor.] # Sir—ln perusing a late Gazette, I noticed that in Otago every goldfields township of note had the benefit of periodical sittings of the District Court. How is it, then that Kumara, with its large population, is exempt from such'?—Because, I believe, of the apathy of its inhabitants, in not making proper application to the Government. Witnesses and others are compelled, at considerable expense to themselves and to the State, to attend at Hokitika. _ Litigants in the lower Courts are sometimes forced to forego appeals, in consequence of the enormous expense attached to such procedure. Now, sir, as Kumara is possessed of the necessary public buildings for holding periodical-sittings of the Court referred to, and his Honor the Judge, in passing between Hokitika and Greymouth, would be very little inconvenienced by staying here a day or two, I hope that you will use the powerful influence of yoiir pen towards accomplishing what must be admitted by all to be a great public benefit,—l remain, Sir, one who has felt the present grievance, An unfortunate Witness. Kumara, 15th August, 1878.
