BOROUGH COUNCIL.
At the meeting of the Borough Council, on Thursday evening last, there were present: Messrs Hannan (in the chair), Campbell, Pearn, O’Hara, Cornfoot, Blake, George, and Hanna. - The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Town Clerk laid on the table the specification for filling-in drain in Main street. A letter was read from the. Colonial Treasurer. A motion by Cr. Cornfoot, seconded by Cr. Campbell, that the Council adjourn till two o’clock on Friday, was lost. ’’ A report of the Public Works Cqramittee, recommending that specifications be prepared by the Surveyor for filling-in culvert in Main street, was, on the motion of Cr, Hanna, seconded by Cr. Pearn, adopted, and the work ordered to be executed. The report of the Finance Committee was read and received. The report of the Town Clerk re subsidy to Benevolent Society was read and received. The following is the Report. “In compliance with a resolution passed at last meeting of the Council, I beg to report that I have made inquiries of the Secretary of the Ladies’ Benevolent Society, and of other persons well informed on the subject, and find that the Society is doing a great deal of good, both by relieving distress and by acting as a check against imposition. The Society has been supported hitherto by voluntary subscriptions, but these are scarcely sufficient to meet the calls upon it, and a moderate sum from the Borough funds would be a great, assistance. recommend that a sum of £25 be granted to the Society for the current year; half to be paid at once, and the balance when required. I think that the Society should apply to the Govern, for the grant in aid given to similar societies in other towns; “ James Wylde, “ Town Clerk.” A report by the Rate Collector was read and received. A motion by Cr. Pearn, seconded by Cr. Hanna, “ That Mr Queale’s request
to be from engagement be granted,” was negatived. Cr. O’Hara moved, and Or. Pearn seconded, “ That in the opinion of this Council it is roves ary that a sum of £IOO be placed on the estimates, t > defray expenditure in providing a Recreation Ground for the town, the surveys for same having been completed by the Town Surveyor.” An amendment by Cr. Cornfoot, seconded by Cr. Hanna, ‘‘That the apportionment of any funds to make a Rrecreation Ground, be deferred to next year,” was carried. Another amendment, by Cr. Hannan, seconded by Cr. Pearn, “ That the 'question be referred to the Public 'Works Committee, to report in one month," was 104.
Cr. Pearn moved and Or. O’tiara seconded, “ That the Hall Committee be instructed to have the Hall fitted up for public meetings.”—Carried. The Borough Surveyor was instructed to report to next meeting on the most Suitable place for a gravel pit. It was moved by Cr. Hannan, seconded by Cri O’Hara, “That the Surveyor be instructed to fill up and make good the hole at the junction of Seddon and Fifth streets.”
An amendment by Of. Cornfoot, seconded by Cr. Blake, “ That the question be referred to the Public Works Committee, with power to act,” was carried. .
