I The schooner Nelly has arrived from 1 the Friendly Islands, bringing Pable t Saraaba, Louis Oliver, W. Gibson, | James Hill, John Morgan, Edward j Clevely, and John M'Gowan, the rej maining survivors of the shipwrecked j bark Kedar, and the following crew of j the bark Leota, also wrecked :—George j Reid, Hugh MTntosh, W. Carter, James Patterson, and Edward M‘Lyod. J. M'Gowan gave the following account of his sufferings on Kan :—I landed on the island on the 15th May, with the chief officer and his party, but was suffering from fever, dysentry, and ague, and had to be left behind. Wandered about the Island by myself, having nothing to eat but grass leaves and shrubs. Could not get water anywhere ; had to do without it eight days. One evening, the fourth day of my sojourn on the island, I saw Jameson, the second mate, on the top of the island. He was on one side of a deep gully, and I was on the other, and I could not get over to him. He called out that he was tired, i and was going to lie there all night. I also lay down upon the spot, and when I awoke next morning I cooyed to him but got no respouce. I did not see him again. I have no doubt he is dead. After that time I wandered 'about half naked, with scarcely anything to eat, sleeping every night in the open air, and becoming very weak. On the 30fch I heard cooeys in the distance, and I replied to them, at the same time going in that direction. After some time, persons came up whom I found to be two natives in search of Jameson and myself. They took me in a canoe to the Island of Tapua, and 1 lived in one of the Native houses two days.” M £ Gowan then c]escribes his subsequent kind treatment by Watkins the missionary, and King George of Tonga, to whom the crew presented a testimonial. Father Hennebery and three priests then went amongst the people, and shortly afterwards announced that - £llOO had been subscribed. The pockets of the waistcoat belong- - ing to O’Connor, lattely convicted of - attempting to poison Mr Light, the - publican have been analysed by Dv. Hector, and found to contain poison. A meeting has been called by the Mayor for this evening, with the object of petitioning the Government to. miti- [ gate O’Connor’s sentence, but this will probably now collapse. There was a sharp shock of earthquake here at 11.40 o’clock on Saturday night.
