[press agency.] Christchurch, July 18. In the Supreme Court yesterday, Chapman, a woolsorter, sued Sir Cracroft Wilson, for £IOOO damages, for malicious prosecution. Some time ago Wilson laid an information against Chapman for stealing wool, who was committed for trial ; but on it coming before the Supreme Court, he was acquitted, In the present case, the jury returned a verdict for plaintiff, for £l5O and costs. Equirs Hoff, charged at the Oxford Magistrate’s Court yesterday with murdering his wife on the Bth July, was committed for trial. His demeanour in Court was very quiet, and he showed very little disposition to cross-examine the witnesses. At various points of the evidence he nodded his assent to •the correctness of the testimony, and when his wife was stated to have been kind to him, he gave a negative shake of his head, and smiled in a cynical manner. When the medical evidence was given, in which it was stattd that the wounds which caused death were administered by either a shingling hammer, or tomahawk, he pointed to the head of the latter, from which the handle had been burnt, as the instrument with which the deed was committed. Hoff never seemed fully to realise his position. He reserved his statement of the affair until he is brought before the Supreme Court. The evidence was most conclusive, and showed brutal conduct on the part of the accusedDunedin, July 18.
