A number of merchants were proceeded against in the Police Court, today for a breach of the Dangerous Goods Act in keeping for sale kerosene under the minimum standard of safety. The eridence of Professor Black showed that some samples flashed as low as 77 degrees Fah. Thefcases were dismissed -for want of proof of ownership, and on the ground that it was not kept for sale, as samples were taken from kerosene in bond In a similar ease against ! a storekeeper, judgment was reserved. Auckland, July 10. ' The following- are the particulars of the accident to the schooner Merlin, from Waitara. In crossing the Kaipara bar the sea being heavy, the captain got into the rigging to point out the channel, the. other two, men being on deck, one steering. The captain, seeing a terrific sea running on the vessel, cried, '* Look out." The man at the wheel got frightened and ran forward. The wave completely covered the vessel, broaching her to, causing the ballast to shift, and throwing her almost on her beam ends. When the wave receeded, the two men on deck were missing. The captain got the schooner near the Pilot Station, where it. was noticed that something was wrong, ami a boat, was sent uti. j Tiie men righted the ballast and anchored the vessel. The same evening . she proceeded to the mills. * • The Auckland Harbor Board has received letters from the Government asking permission to reclaim seven acres for a railway'station at Queen street. The Wharf Board resolved to defer their decision until after the receipt of Conyers' and Lawsou's report. 'J he man Black, victim of attempted murder at Arch Hill, is recovering. It is generally understood that Ministers will be ready with their principal measures as soon as the real business of the session commences. .The Financial Statement, it is understood, will be ready to be submitted for discussion at as early a period as the House may desire after the opening of Parliament. Copies of the Licensing Bill will be available as soon as it is mature, and out of the Ministers, and printer's hands. The Post Offi<;e Department have made arrangements with Edwards and Co for that firm to send out the steamer Kennedy from Nelson to Karaiuea, to pick up the Result's passengers, &c. the course he adopted, Mr Brown said the course adopted by the House regarding the land fund was wise, hut Government had not since kept faith with Canterbury. He decidedly opposed manhood suffrage, which would b". a great mistake—in fact, almost a crime. He opposed a land tax; —a property tax was the fairest one they could have. He advocated the extension of the railway to the West Coast, and said Ashley should have two members, or Hnruuui should be the boundary. The Premier had not yet enunciated a single point of policy that ha would support. A vote of-thanks and of confidence was proposed; but, by amendment, a vote of thanks only was carried.
