Westport, July 15. The steamer Result, which trades between Westport and Karainea, was wrecked at six p.m. on Thursday last, about halfway from the Karamea. She was in the surf several hours. There are no lives lost.

The cause of the stranding of the p.s. Result at Karamea was no light being shown at the signal station. Wraden Broad, Postmaster Shrimpton, and Alex. Stitt, of Westport, were among the passengers, and all were safely lauded, but they suffered much from exposure. In the Supreme Court to-day, a man named Rankin sued tLe Norwich Uuion Insurance Company for £IOO, being the unpaid balance on a tire insurance policy in 1875. Rankiu insured hia house for £SOO, with the Company. In 1877 the house was burned down when the Company refused to pay more than £4OO, on the ground that the amount teudered by them was full value of the house. After hearing the evidence, the Jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff for the full amount, with interest and costs. Timothy Houlahan, an elderly man, was committed for trial on a charge of rape on a girl under eight years of age. Several cases whicli were heard against persons keeping kerosene for sale without branding the same " dangerous" have been dismissed with a caution to defendants.
