[press agency.] Auckland, July 13. An old offender named Crowe has been arrested charged with murdering another man of bad repute named Black. Both men were at a house of ill-fame in the surbnrb of Aro hill, 'when a fight occurred in which Crowe was worsted, Crowe afterwards came behind Black and while walking with a woman struck him a heavy blow with a billhook, the weapon sticking in his skull. The man was afterwards removed to the hospital, where his dying deposition was taken, there being no hope of his recovery. The Orange soiree and ball last evening was attended by 500 people. Port Chalmers, July 13. Arrived—Panmure, 95 days from London. She brings 29 passengers and 3590 tons cargo. She experienced heavy weather crossing Southern Ocean. On June 16th, shipped heavy sea, carried away two life boats, quarter boat, bridge, compass, po®p and rails, and started deck-house and 60 feet iron bulwarks. The sea swept the deck of everything moveable, including some cases of acids.

At the meeting of the Road Board Conference, to-day, Mr Joynt gave his opinion regarding the non-payment of the balance of the land fund, and the Conference unanimously resolved—- " That this Conference having heard the opinion of the Council on the subject of the recovery of the balance of the land fund, due to the 31st December last, is of opinion that the necessary proceedings be taken with the least possible delay, and the Conference, therefote, request Mr Joynt to take the necessary steps accordingly." Tapanui, July 15. By a fire which occurred at John Cameron's Spylaw, on Saturday, at 5 p.m., the large stables, barn, and chaffhouse were totally destroyed ; -also 400 bushels oats. They were insured in the Victoria for £l5O, but the estimated loss is £4OO. The origin of the fire is unknown as it is supposed that no one was in the building from noon, and the last persons to leave the stable did not smoke or use matches. This is the fourth similar case of fire in this district in a few months where stables have been destroyed, and no cause could be assigned for the outbreak; and all were insurred in the Victoria Office.
