There is at last a probability of the new Hospital being proceeded with, as the following telegram has been received by the Secretary of that institution, from G. S. Cooper, Esq., Under-Secretary:— “Plans and specifications returned by mail. Please call for tenders ; money ready when wanted for progress payments. See letter of this date.” We have no doubt that the Committee will on this authority call for tenders at once.

Mr Barff is in receipt of a telegram from the Colonial Secretary to the effect that His Excellency the Governor has been placed to allow the widow of T. K. Christian, Bailiff of the Courts, at Hokitika, a gratuity of £163. The Rev. G. Morice will preach at the Presbyterian Church to-morrow evening only. A meeting of the Kumara German Society, will be held at the Crown Hotel, to-morrow (Sunday), at 3 o’clock. The Crown Lands Ranger will attend at his temporary office, at the Empire Hotel, on Thursday next, for the purpose of issuing timber licenses. Sergent Emraerson is gazetted Gaoler of the Kumara Gaol, vice Constable Loftus, transferred.

The West Coast Times says amongst the items set forth in the schedule of the Arahura Road Board (amounting in all to £I6OO 8s 9d) the following occur:—Bryne (secretary), £62 10s ; do, £25 ; do, £ll 18s ; do, £27 10s ; £l4 5s ; do (salary), £125 ; decompensation), £175; do, £2O 16s 8d ; total, £462 19s§8d. The Arahura Road Board are now endevouring to collect a rate and it was stated in the Council yesterday that every penny collected would be lodged in soma bank to pay the secretary. If the ratepayers were to follow the advice of the County Council tendered to them- they would not pay a sixpence of this rate under the circumstances.

A special telegram to the Wellington Post under date July 5, says “ The Australian cricketers have now played eight matches, and their averages which have been made up for the first six, show the five highest batting averages to be Midwinter 29 per innings, Bailey 26, Garret 20, O. Bannerman 19, Spoorth 18.
