The official declaration of the poll, in the late election will be made by the Returning Officer, to-morrow at noon, at the Resident Magistrate's Court, Hokitika.
To-morrow being the close of the Government financial year will be a busy day throughout the various Government offices in the colony, as all returns and accounts must be forwarded to Wellington on that day. We would therefore warn all persons wanting business at the Court House, that the offices will be closed at 12 o'clock noon, after which hours no business will be transacted.
In answer to continued correspondence, and repeated telegrams forwarded to the Government by the senior member for the district, re refund of publicans licenses, Kumara. Mrßarffhas received the following reply from the Colonial Treasurer : "Government have decided to refund the publicans licenses and will place amount on next Estimates. J. Ballance."
The performance in aid of Mrs Gaffney, by the Amatiier Dramatic Club, will take place at the Theatre Royal this evening. The pieces selected are—" A Batchelor of Arts," and the "Lady of Lyons." The Dillman's Town Band who have kindly given their services, will no doubt add to the success of the entertainment. Should the weather prove favourable we expect to see a crowded house, not only on account of the object for which the performance is given, but as a testimony that the services of our local Amateur Dramatic Club are appreciated. Therewas.no meeting of the Borough Council last evening, as although some of the Councillors put in an appearance, they were not sufficient in number to form a quorum.
We are requested to state, that the ball announced at Hannan's Post Office Hotei, will positively take place this evening. Mr S. T. George in another column thanks the electors of this and the adjacent townships for returning him as their representative.
There Was a meeting of the Hospital Committee last evening, a full report of which is held over.
Balls are announced to take place this evening, at Reynold's Hotel, Dillman's Town, and at the Morning Star Hotel, Seddon street.
It is not very often that Mr Price, R.M., is complimentary from the Bench, but yesterday-he availed himself of the opportunity when licenses were being applied for to comment favorably upon several of the hotels. Taking them in order he said of Homo's National Hotel " A cleaner house I have never been in ;" of Hannan's Post Office Hotel, " Without doubt it is a very good house ;" and of Gilbert Stewart's, " It id really a pleasure to give a license to such a house." On the whole Mr Price seemed to think that the licensed victuallers .of Kumara understand their business, and keep their houses in a creditable manner.
