[TO TfltE EDITOR.]. Sin.—ln your report of the meeting of Mr George at the Theatre, on Saturday evening, that gentleman is represented to have said —-" Where are your railways ? This is a matter for your representatives to urge upon the Government; but gentlemen, I think your members have been asleep on this question. 0 lam convinced that Mr George Would not make a wilful misrepresentation, but he can have taken but small pains to become conversant with the proceedings of the last sitting; of the General Assembly, or he would become aware of some facts of the.case. So far from being asleep • on the matter of railways, early in the session I moved for, and obtained the appointment of aSele.t Committee, which considered the question of Constructing a railway to connect the towns of Hokitika and Greymouth with a line to Kumara. Most important evidence was taken, which showed that plans and specifications were complete, and that nothing remained.to .be done but to obtain the authority of the Assembly "to commence the work. .On the,27th of November, T, as Chairman of the Committee, brought up a - comprehensive report, which summarised the , evidence, set forth arguments .in -favor of constructing the line, and "concluded by recommending it. The report with minutes of the evidence,. 18 published in the Appendix to the Prjweedings. Further, for twelve years* past 1., ftaye. workfed hard to obtain the construction of, a line of railway to connect the ;Ea*?t ;ahd 'West Coasts.—lam, yours, &c." '" ' , • Edmund Babct.
