Granville Flat his cart capsized and fell on his neck. An accident occurred to the Patea coach when coming into town this evening about half-past fqur. When ahout five miles from town, .growing dusk, a swagauiiin started from the side of the
road and frightened the horses, which plunged and swerved, overturning the j coach against the bank on the side of l the road. Captain Marshall, A.C., was I vpilently thrown out and his shoulder dislocated. He received other injuries, but not dangerous. Another passenger had a rib broken and scalp wounds. Hall, the driver, behaved admirably. According to the testimony of the passengers he tried his best to regain the command of his horses after the accident, and to set things strait. One horse was fatally injured, and others hurt. The sufferers are progressing favourably. Napier, June 20. Arrow y. .Harding.—This libel case was commenced this afternoon, and will last until late to-night. The plaintiff is Returning Officer for Waipawa County, and the defendaut the wellknown runholder at Mount Vermon. Defendant wrote to the Council that the plaintiff (Arrow) had divulged how he (defendant) hacl voted in an election for the Waipukurou Riding when the Hon. H. R. Russell and Sidney Johnstone were candidates. - Heavy rain. last nisjht cdmpletely flooded the buildings constructed by the Government for the Native'meeting, and great dissatisfaction is freely expressed among the Maoris. Rewi telegraphs to the Government for tents for their accomodation. Auckland, June 20. The house of Mr R. B. Lusk (senr.), Parriell, was totally destroyed by fire this afternoon. Cause—~a burning stick of wood fell on the hearth during the absence of the residents. Loss estimated at £600; insured in the New Zealand office, buildings for £275, also policy on furniture, which was partly saved.
The Chamber of Commerce carried resolutions in favour of extending the Auckland, railway station to Queen street, and also urging the Government to subsidise a. direct steain service from London to New Zealand, calling at four of the leading sea ports of the Colony. An elderly man named Hunt, a carpenter attempted, to blow his brains out on the jetty, by pnttmg. a small bag of powder in his month and applying a match to it; his mouth was much shattered. Detective Bain left for Newcastle to arrest the absconder Blythe, who embezzled money from the Albion Brewery Company. Mr Vincent Pyke has addressed his constituents, and received a vote of confidence.
