J At a meeting of the Committee ap- ; pointed by the public meeting to form a Prospecting Association, held at the Town Hall, on Wednesday, it was resolved—--Ist, Tliat Mr Wylde be requested to act as Honorary Secretary. 2nd, That Mr v O'Hara be requested to act on the Com-
mmittee. 3rd, That the following gentlemen be appointed to canvass the town for support to a Prospecting Association : Messrs Cuming, Anderson, and Seddon, to canvass Seddon street; Messrs Dungan, Pearn, and O'Hara, to canvass the Main Road; and to report to an adjourned meeting on Tuesday next, at 3 o'clock in the afternoon.
Mr S. T. George will address the electors at Dillman's Town this evening, immediately after Mr FitzGerald-'s meeting,
The following telegram was received yesterday by E. Barff, Esq., M.H.R., in reply to- one forwarded to the Government, containing, the resolution passed at the public meeting held on June 15th : "Tereniakau Bridge.—l believe this matter has been definitely settled, but Minister for Public Works has your telegram of 17th before him for action, if possible."—"G. Grey."
Our remarks relative to the ' Zig-Zag road, in yesterday's issue were fully borne out last night, when the ground alluded to came down bodily, bringing with it a large amount of debris, and completely stopping all coach traffic. The Greenstone coach which left here in the afternoon was in consequence unable to return last evening.
Some excitement was caused in town last evfening by a report that gold had been found in a creek about three miles below the.punt. Several parties left early this morning for the locality, but up to the present tinie there is nothing definite known to cause even a small rush.
The speech of Mr Fitz Gerald at the Theatre Royal last evening was very favourably received.- As he had attended the nominations in Hokitika in the morning when he. spoke on the hustings, and only arriyed-here a few,minutes before he ascended the platform, he was naturally fatigued. At the termination of the proceedings a large and influential committee was formed to secure his election, will meet on Saturday evening at the Empire Hotel. ■ *
We regret to hear that, a miner named Smith met with a serious accident yesterday, at.Dillman's Town. In company with his mates he was engaged in felling a tree which when cut through, and; :in '.the act of fallings slipped baek. off the stump, the butt striking Smith on the knee cap, completely smashing jt. He was at once Brought to town, and from thence to the Hokitika Hospital. ~ .. A meeting of gentlemen favourable to the return of Mr George will be held this evening a&the Bnek's/Bb'ad Hotel, Mam Road, at eight o'clock.
There-was no sitting of the Licensing .Court this morning, inconsequence. of.the Licensing Officer (Mr Price, R.M.), not having finished his tour of. inspection. -• The inspection' parade of the local Rifles will be held this evening, at the Public .
