THE KUMARA CHESS CLUB.
The adjourned public meeting of persons interested in chess was held last evening, at Ruga's Hotel. There was a much larger attendance than at the first meriting. Mr Janion was appointed chairman, and, being one of the Committee to draw up the Rules to be submitted for the approval or i ejection of the meeting, proceeded to read them.
After the confirmation of the first Rale—" That the club shall be called the Kumara Chess Club," the question of a place for meeting a d practice came on for discussion, and It was moved by Mr Gordon, and seconded by Mr Smart, and carried, " That any member of the Kumara Literary Institute shall be eligible to be elected a member of the Chess Club O" sui scribing to the funds of the Club." And for the special support of the club it was moved by Mr Gordon, seconded by Mr Gill, and passed unanimously, "That members shall pay a subscription of 2s 6d to the funds of the club, and that hew members shall pay an entrance fee of 2s 6d." On the motion of Mr Smart, seconded by Mr Gill, Mr Janion was elected President, of the club; and Mr Petrie, Secretary and Treasurer. Messrs Gill, Blackburn, and Smart were elected members of the Committee. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Wiesner, secondei by Mr Morgan—- " That Wednesday in each week be a special night for meeting. It was also resolved, on the motion of Mr Toms, seconded by Mr "Smart—- " That thw first Wednesday in eanh month be a geneial meeting night for business." By a resolution, also passed, the Committee are invested with the power of electing new members. Eleven gentlemen present gave in their names as members to join the club. . After the business pertaining to the organization of the club had been transacred, the President stated that he.had been in conversation a few days ago with one of the players of Greymouth in the late match, and that gentleman informed him that he expected to play the return match next month. He (the President) would now suggest that a' competitive j tourney should take place for thecboice
of six players to represent Baimara in the next contest. If -no return match were played, a tournament would at the present time be| well patronised, and he would like everyone to have a chance of lieing one of the team.
Mr Smai-t thought they might safely consider Messrs Cross, Talmer, and Janion as three of the best piayers, and regard them as elected representatives. This was agreed to.
It was then proposed by Mr Gill, seconded by Mr Morgan, and carried "That a list be open for a week",in the Kumara Institute, giving all persons who wish to join the club the opportunity of taking part in a tr, urue y for three players in the re*., uril m ' atcn with Greyniouth; each to play every other compef' tor one game, ' and the tliree winners of most games to be chostm."—Caiw d. The Chess ComraU tee to take charge of the conduct of t'ne tournament. Eleven players signified their intention to compete.. The proceedings then closed.
